What to Expect From Your First Massage

If you’re booking your first massage, it’s normal to feel a little unsure about what to expect. At Metta Massage, my goal is to create a calm, supportive experience from the moment you arrive, especially for first-time clients. This guide walks you through what your first massage session will look like, so you can arrive feeling relaxed and confident.

Before Your Massage: Arrival & Intake

When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll be welcomed into a quiet, private space designed to help your body and nervous system settle. Before your session begins, we’ll take a few minutes for a brief intake and conversation.

During this time, we’ll discuss:

  • Areas of tension or discomfort

  • Your stress levels and energy

  • Any injuries, surgeries, or health considerations

  • Your goals for the session (relaxation, pain relief, lymphatic support, etc.)

This conversation allows me to tailor your massage to your specific needs, whether you’re seeking deep relaxation, focused therapeutic work, deep tissue, etc.

Getting Comfortable on the Table

Once we’ve discussed your session goals, I’ll step out of the room so you can get comfortable on the massage table. You’ll undress to your level of comfort and lie under the sheet and blanket provided.

You will always be fully draped, with only the area being worked on uncovered at any time. Your comfort, safety, and privacy are always respected.

If you ever feel too warm, too cool, or need an adjustment during your massage, you’re encouraged to speak up.

During Your Massage Session

Your massage session at Metta Massage is intentionally unhurried and personalized. Depending on your needs and the type of appointment you book, your session may include:

  • Relaxation massage to calm the nervous system

  • Therapeutic or deep tissue techniques for chronic tension

  • Gentle manual lymphatic drainage to support circulation and reduce swelling

  • Mindful, intuitive touch focused on whole-body balance

The pressure used will always be guided by your comfort level. Massage should feel effective and supportive — not painful or overwhelming.

Many clients find they naturally begin to breathe more deeply and feel their body soften as the session progresses. It’s common to feel deeply relaxed, quiet, or even drift in and out of sleep.

Supporting the Nervous System

Massage is not only beneficial for muscles — it also plays an important role in nervous system regulation. Slowing down, receiving safe and intentional touch, and allowing your body to rest can help shift you out of “fight or flight” and into a more restorative state.

This is especially helpful if you’re feeling:

  • Chronically stressed or overwhelmed

  • Emotionally or mentally fatigued

  • Tight or tense without a clear cause

Each session at Metta Massage is approached with care and presence, allowing your body to unwind at its own pace.

After Your Massage

After your session, you’ll have a few moments to slowly re-orient before getting dressed. It’s common to feel relaxed, grounded, or a little spacey afterward.

You may also notice:

  • Increased thirst

  • Mild soreness in worked areas

  • A sense of calm or emotional release

Drinking water and giving yourself time to rest afterward can help support the benefits of your massage.

If helpful, I’ll offer gentle aftercare suggestions based on your session, such as hydration, stretching, or follow-up frequency.

How Often Should You Get a Massage?

For first-time clients, massage frequency varies depending on your goals. Some people come occasionally for relaxation, while others benefit from more consistent sessions to address chronic tension, stress, or lymphatic support.

We can discuss a frequency that feels supportive and realistic for you, without pressure or obligation.
